In early November 2005, it was brought to the attention of Lorenz Fischer, President of Rails to Cottages Inc., that the layout at the Whippany Railway Museum had been dismantled several years earlier and had not been replaced. The layout had been an important and anticipated display for visitors, both young and old, at the museum for many years. Unforeseen events led to the layout not being quickly replaced. Rails to Cottages Inc. decided to construct and deliver a new layout to the Whippany Railway Museum and decided to have it installed for at least a good part of the 2005-2006 Winter Museum Season. With the help of four additional volunteers, Lorenz Fischer, Walter Neumaier, Fred Rhinehart, Fred Mehrhof, and V.J. Filomeno donated over 500 hours of labor to construct the new layout for the museum. With the donations of track from Gargraves Trackage and switches from Ross Custom Switches, we were able to keep the costs of materials for the layout to a minimum. We successfully delivered and reinstalled the layout in the main building at the museum site in Whippany in late December 2005. The layout was designed so that the scenery can be changed to reflect different scenes or holidays throughout the year. I would invite you to stop by the Whippany Railway Museum to see the Custom Train Layout as well as the many other
displays and exhibits.
